The dozer I was looking at had just 7000 hours, so luckily I left it alone.! (Apologize for my inability to remember a lot of those details back three years. He also said John Deere believed when these John Deere dozers were designed, they would go 10,000 hours before there would be a problem with the hydrostatic drives.they soon found out that at about 7000 hours they began to fall apart. He also said when one side of the hydrostatic drive starts to bother, you have to fix them both and they are very expensive to fix. talked to shop manager at John Deere there in Sioux Falls (don't remember their name ) and he said there was a problem with something (dont' remember what ) in the hydrostatic drives that was simple to fix, but the dozer had to be nearly dismantled to get at it to fix. Three years ago I was trying to buy a JD 850B.was in Sioux Falls. John deere 850 dozer reviews how to#
I would like to hear from other owners and ideas on how to diagnose the problem. There are some other ideas too other than the worst case.Įven if I have to spend $20K on two new transmissions, I'll still be okay, because the unit has a good engine and new undercarriage. I have spoken with a couple 850B owners that say I should have the transmissions pressure tested and set, and that this may fix it. Without a load, pressure is about 250 lbs on the gauge. If the temp gauge is working, the transmission doesn't heat beyond normal. There are times when it steers fine under a load and times that it won't even counter rotate correctly. Under a load it does lose transmission pressure and the power to the tracks is almost nil.

Yesterday was the first day I could really run it and try to diagnose. I just purchased a Deere 850B dozer rather cheaply at auction because it was stated that at least one of the hydrostats was getting weak.
